Sawai Madhopur Black Pottery:
Location: Sawai Madhopur, Rajasthan – also known for the Ranthambhore Tiger Reserve.
Recognition: The pottery craft holds a GI (Geographical Indication) tag.
Materials:
- Fine clay from the Banas River.
- Resin from the Dhonk Tree and local stone powder used in slurry.
- Cow dung cakes used as fuel for firing.
Process:
- Items are shaped with simple tools made from discarded objects.
- Textured with intricate patterns, burnished, and dried.
- Dipped in slurry, polished, and fired in a sealed kiln to create a smoky atmosphere.
- Firing gives the pottery a unique blackish-grey finish.
- Design Inspiration: Motifs inspired by the Trinetra Ganesh Temple and local flora & fauna, especially tigers.
Usage: Functional and decorative ware.
